Machias Bay

Locals plotted the first naval battle of the Revolution at Burnham Tavern in Machias. These days, you’ll find them celebrating at the Wild Blueberry Festival in August. Either way, you can celebrate, too. Margaretta Days in Machias will take you back to 1775, with live reenactments, period demonstrations, and even period food like moose stew. The festival is a weekend of fun, featuring good eats, cooking contests, and more. Other activities abound! Try raking blueberries at Welch Farm or Beddington Ridge Farm. Enjoy a seaweed bake of freshly dug clams and lobsters. Tour a sea-salt or cranberry farm, or collect maple sap. Enjoy the coastal sights, from working lobster boats to swooping seabirds, colorful lobster buoys to a gorgeous sunset on the distant ocean horizon.

It’s easy to navigate, thanks to our guides and maps for the 87-mile-long DownEast Sunrise Trail and the 125-mile Bold Coast Scenic Byway, taking in stunning seascapes, vast blueberry barrens, and authentic fishing villages. South of Machias, visit Roque Bluffs State Park—274 acres of coastal landscape along a half-mile crescent of sand and pebbles, perfect for swimming, kayaking, and hiking. In search of unique art? Try the area’s summertime art walks, plus a wealth of antiques, gifts, local crafts, and local foods!
