17th Annual Deer Isle Jazz Festival: Artifacts Trio

The Deer Isle Jazz Festival has been breaking boundaries, enriching the state’s cultural life, and filling the summer air with beautiful music since 2001. World-class jazz musicians and fans from all over the New England region travel Down East to spend an evening together in our intimate and acoustically charmed Stonington Opera House.

This year, the Festival is expanding to three nights, at venues across the island. We begin on Friday night the Stonington Opera House with Nicole Mitchell’s ARTIFACTS trio. Saturday night we travel to the Reach Performing Arts Center for an evening with the Campbell Brothers, and Sunday night, finish off you jazz weekend at gWatson Gallery for an intimate evening with the Gary Smulyan Duo.

17th Annual Deer Isle Jazz Festival: Artifacts Trio

Flute, cello and drum trios are rare in jazz, and one with the full sound and rhythmic precision of this technically assured equal-partners collective is rarer still.

Flutist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Mike Reed draw upon direct involvement with Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a half-century-old organization that remains among jazz’s most influential. Though grounded in history, their original compositions are uniquely contemporary. Their arrangements of pieces like Steve McCall’s “I’ll Be Right Here Waiting,” are, as the New York Times said, “intrepid, soulful and hauntingly beautiful.”

Enjoy an exciting evening as the Artifacts trio brings its unique personality to their own music, and to works by composers including Pulitzer-Prize winner Henry Threadgill.

Opening Act:

6 Blind Mice Combo

As always, Friday night features local students from George Stevens Academy. Featuring Mira Schubeck (trumpet & flugelhorn), Isla Brownlow (trombone), Nellie Haldane, (vibes & tenor sax), Yvonne Rogers (piano), Christian Jones (bass & bass guitar), Joseph Boulet (drums), and Steve Orlofsky (conductor & alto sax)

Join Steve Orlovsky and some of the regions most talented teens to kick off the festival!
