Family Attractions

Fun attractions and exciting adventures abound for the entire family amid the magnificent natural beauty of Acadia National Park and the surrounding environs of Mount Desert Island.

Go for a hike on one of the park’s 120 miles of beautiful trails, which range from short strolls to half-day walks to all day rambles. Explore Bar Island at low tide, hike along the Ocean Path, wander the shores of Jordan Pond, or climb to the top of The Beehive. Pedal a bicycle along the world-famous carriage roads that wind through the leafy woods past quiet ponds. Paddle a kayak in an ocean cove or on a sparkling lake to enjoy the physical pleasure and the salty coastal air. Bring your own play toys and go on your own, or get rental gear and head out with a knowledgeable guide.

Take a grand tour of the park on a narrated bus or trolley excursion to view the must-see sights along the Park Loop Road, like the lofty summit of Cadillac Mountain, the waves lapping at Sand Beach, the pounding surf at Thunder Hole, the long grassy lawn sloping down to Jordan Pond, and the wooded delights of Sieur de Monts Spring and its Nature Center.

Enjoy the sun and a refreshing swim at Sand Beach or Echo Lake, the park’s two popular swimming spots. Relax for a while at a picnic area to enjoy a delicious lunch or snack overlooking the ocean. Wander the shore at low tide to see the treasures hidden among the tidepools in the rocks.

Hop aboard a ferry, nature cruise, or sailing cruise to see the offshore islands and get a unique look at the beauty of Acadia from the perspective of the sea. Go for a whale watching cruise to see the largest mammals on the planet, or a puffin watching voyage for a look at the colorful seabirds.

Visit the Abbe Museum for fascinating exhibits on the colorful Wabanaki people, Maine’s original permanent residents, while shiny cars of all shapes and sizes await inquisitive eyes at the Seal Cove Auto Museum. At The Oceanarium, learn about the Maine lobster and other marine animals by holding and touching them at the popular Discovery Pool Touch Tank.
