The Mount Desert Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery, affectionately known simply as The Oceanarium, is located on Thomas Bay at the north end of Mount Desert Island, on Route 3 not far from the Acadia National Park Thompson Island Visitor Center.
The extensive facility features a variety of educational and entertaining exhibits where adults and children alike can learn about the ocean and its tides, sea salts, seaweeds, seagulls, and weather and survival. With the assistance of a staff member, visitors can learn about marine animals by holding and touching them at the popular Discovery Pool Touch Tank.
The Maine lobster figures large at The Oceanarium, with the Lobster Museum, Lobster Fishing Program and Lobster Hatchery. Take a fun walk through the grounds on the Thomas Bay Salt Marsh Tour. Enjoy a restful break and the lovely view from the picnic area and gazebo.
Owners Andrea and David Mills have operated The Oceanarium for more than 40 years, making many improvements over time to enhance the experience, which remains a perennial favorite among island visitors.
The fare-free Island Explorer shuttle bus makes frequent stops at The Oceanarium. Bar Harbor is just 9 miles south on Route 3.
