Acadia All-American Road

Maine Scenic Byway

A 40-mile route encompassing Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, the Acadia All-American Road features beaches, bicycling, foliage, hiking trails, islands, ocean views, and wildlife.

The byway starts at the Ellsworth-Trenton town line where, for the first few miles, you’ll find specialty retailers, theme-park-style activities that are fun for families, and classic lobster pounds with picnic-table dining. Heading onto Mount Desert Island, stop at the Mount Desert Oceanarium to learn about lobsters and other sea creatures. Continue into Bar Harbor, a haven of historic landmarks, lodgings, eateries, and excursions, like whale watching and Oli’s Trolley.

You’ll then travel onto Acadia National Park’s 27-mile-long Park Loop Road. Pack your binoculars for this segment, a prime spot for spying bald eagles and nesting peregrine falcons. Pull into Sand Beach for a swim in the cool ocean water. Then take off again for stops further down the road, like the famous Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, and Jordan Pond House—a historic teahouse popular for its lovely grounds and tasty popovers. Take a side trip up the winding road to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the region’s highest peak, or park along Eagle Lake Road for a bike ride along our secluded carriage roads. Along the way, you’ll find Acadia’s many hiking trails and walks, ranging from easy to athletic. When you return to Bar Harbor, relax in our parks with a scoop of homemade ice cream!
