Cadillac Summit Path

(Very Easy hiking, 0.3-mile loop)

The lofty summit of Cadillac Mountain rises to 1,528 feet above sea level, making it not only the highest mountain in Acadia National Park, but the highest point along the entire east coast of the United States. A trip to top of this bare-topped, pink granite peak is a must for any visitor. You can hike any of a variety of trails to get there, but most people opt simply to make the drive up the mountain via the winding and scenic 3.5-mile Cadillac Mountain Road.

The Cadillac Summit Center, on the right as you reach the top of mountain, has park information, a gift shop, snacks, and restrooms. Continue ahead on the curving drive to the large summit parking lot. The Cadillac Summit Path begins to the right of the lot, and can be accessed from several points along the sidewalk.

This paved and accessible 0.3-mile loop walk yields panoramic vistas ranging from the village of Bar Harbor and the islands of Frenchman Bay to the Schoodic Peninsula and Winter Harbor across the bay to the east to the Cranberry Isles to the south.

Along the walking route are four waysides, viewing platforms with interpretive signs that describe the many fine views and detail some of the natural and human history of the park. Be sure to bring your camera, and perhaps a sweater or windbreaker, as the open summit can be cool and windy, even in summer.

For peakbaggers interested in standing on the true highpoint of the Cadillac Mountain, take the wide path just left of the Cadillac Summit Center easily uphill for 100 yards. You’ll find the tiny bronze summit survey marker on top of a rock shelf 20 feet off the trail to the right.
