Culinary Adventures
What is a vacation without sampling the local cuisine? DownEast & Acadia has delicious lobster served at a wide variety of restaurants along with all kinds of other seafood, such as clams, scallops, haddock, salmon and on and on.
Public suppers are a true DownEast tradition. Many local churches, schools, communities and veterans' organizations run public suppers, throughout the year and especially in the summer. These can range from chowder or baked bean suppers to roast beef suppers and lobster bakes. Whatever the fare, you are sure of a great meal (usually with homemade pie as dessert) and a great chance to meet and chat with some local people. Don't be shy about attending. These events are fundraisers and they will be happy to see you!
Beyond dining, the culinary specialties include many local delicacies such as blueberries, gourmet chocolates, stone-ground mustard, locally-produced sea salt, home-made jams and shell-shaped cookies. And let's not forget the ice cream. Mainers are known world wide for being ice-cream lovers (even in winter!) and there are many spots along the roadside and in the towns serving the local or homemade varieties in many flavors (yes, even lobster-flavored for the adventurous!). And if you love to cook, how about taking a gourmet cooking class as part of your vacation?
Because we are an agricultural area, we offer the whole spectrum of good, fresh and organic foods to enjoy here or take home.
Be sure to ask us for our Lighthouses and Lobsters brochure for some highlights on our lighthouses and more information on lobsters too!
