(Very Easy hiking, 0.7 miles one-way)

This wide gravel path leads walkers through a scenic area known as Wonderland on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island just east of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and the village of Bass Harbor. Find parking and the start of the Wonderland Trail on the south side of Route 102A, one mile west of the entrance to Seawall Campground and Seawall Picnic Area, and just over a mile east of the junction of Route 102A and the Lighthouse Road, which leads to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.

In a pleasant and mostly level half-mile through the fragrant evergreen woods along this old fire road, you’ll arrive at the junction of a short loop. Take either route left or right to quickly reach the ocean and a cobble beach at the end of a little peninsula situated between Bennet Cove and Ship Harbor. From the lovely vantage point of the beach you can see the Duck Islands offshore to the south, and the profile of Great Cranberry Island to the northeast. Kids and parents alike will have fun exploring among the rocks and tide pools.
