Dining and Nightlife

DownEast Acadia's culinary treats span the spectrum from roadside stands to gourmet restaurants, offering local cuisine or exotic dishes inspired by many traditions. Fishing and farming are longstanding traditions here, so it’s only natural that eateries take great pride in using locally sourced seafood, produce, and meats, often delivered straight from the ocean or field to the kitchen.

From our larger towns, like Bar Harbor, to those out-of-the-way fishing villages down long, narrow roads, we have quite the variety of eateries—from high-end restaurants to no-frills seafood shacks on the shore—that offer our preeminent seafood, lobster, in many tasty dishes. It starts with the lusciously overstuffed lobster roll and the classic lobster dinner, but many chefs feature lobster as the star in their own recipes. But don’t forget our many other types of seafood—scallops, shrimp, clams haddock, and salmon—fresh, tasty and plentiful served in traditional ways such as chowders or fried and broiled, or offered with unique twists. (Check out the sites on the Downeast Fisheries Trail to learn about our region's fishing heritage and industry, too). For dessert, you can leave room for pie made from blueberries or other fruits picked directly from Maine fields, or stroll the streets to find homemade pastry, ice cream, and candy shops.

For the perfect night on the town, you can follow dinner with the many opportunities we offer for outdoor music, dances, sunset cruises, festivals, movies,  moonlight paddles, ranger talks at Acadia National Park, a round of mini-golf, a latte in a cafe, or a stroll down to the pier to view the fishing boats under a rising moon. A unique offering is Bar Harbor’s own comedy club, ImprovAcadia, bringing improv artists from across the country for evening sets.

Don't forget to heck the local newspaper, community bulletin boards, or local chamber of commerce for up-to-date information on activities in DownEast Acadia while you are here.
