Family Attractions

Families have long been traveling to DownEast Acadia for family vacations, to visit our beautiful coves and explore tide pools. Getting out into nature is an unbelievable experience at any age. There are however times when the gang is ready to do something that is just plain old fun. Maybe hit the beach or spend some time in the arcade. Putting your way to victory visiting an animal preserve. The DownEast Acadia Region of Maine is an ideal destination for families because here you will find all of these and more.

A day at the beach is one of those great experiences that is hard to find fault with. Sand, sun, surf. A trifecta of fun, and while the waters DownEast always stay on the cool side, the beaches here are magnificent. Visit Roque Bluff State Park, with a half mile of soft sand it’s a gem. Quoddy State Park in Lubec also offers an ideal selfie spot at the West Quoddy Light. And finally, you cannot go wrong in Acadia National Park at Sand Beach; flanked on each side by high cliffs, this beach is a beautiful part of an American classic.

One of the greatest attractions here, and certainly even the biggest is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory. Just a few miles up from the mouth of the Penobscot River this massive bridge is also home to one of the only bridges in the world with an elevator to the top, offering a panoramic view of the Penobscot as it makes its way east to the bay and north to Acadia and Katahdin. At the foot of the bridge is Fort Knox a defensive complex that offers visitors a glimpse back into military life in early Maine.
