With so much ground to cover to see all of the DownEast Acadia region, sometimes it requires a little more power. Whether you are looking to ride the trails in the winter atop an agile snowmobile, take that unforgettable motorcycle trip along the Bold Coast, or explore blueberry barrens and back woods on a four-wheeler or UTV, a visit to DownEast Acadia will not let you down. Plus, with lakes, ponds and rivers up and down the coast, those with speedy little motorboats will find a boatload of ways to enjoy the region. In fact, with over 125 recognized boat launches throughout Washington & Hancock counties its almost a sin if you have access to a boat and don’t take advantage of the good times to be had here.

For those who do bring a motorboat, check out the Maine Public Reserved Lands at Donnell Pond, Duck Lake, and Rocky Lake. These are lands put aside by Maine for public use and these three feature more than just land. A couple other options include the waters off of Roque Bluff State Park or Cobscook Bay State Park.

Hitting the road on the back of a bike in DownEast is like having your blueberry pie and eating it too. This region is made for road-tripping – destination optional. Our scenic byways will blow you away, with each one more spectacular than the next. But the road that we suggest for bikers is the Airline which cuts straight across the region through serene and beautiful rural places with big sky and straight roads. Another great ride we suggest is up SR 191 from Machiasport to Cutler and then on to Lubec.

Off the road we have plenty to offer as well in summer and winter. Both ATV and snowmobile riders will find plenty to do here with trails managed by local clubs with great crisscross the region, there is the Beddington trail, old logging roads in Washington county converted to trails and managed by the state – nearly 50 miles of excellent riding, the DownEast Sunrise Trail a shared use trail, and then there are the ITS trails that connect it all together–look for routes 81 & 82, as well as the 101. Be safe and have fun.
